Why Travel by Luxury Train

More of India.
Less of the logistics.

Deccan Odyssey · India

The difference

Why a luxury train, not another hotel-to-hotel itinerary?

If you've done the Orient Express, you already know the feeling. You check in once. You have dinner. You fall asleep. When you open the curtains the next morning, you're somewhere completely different, and everything is already arranged.

The Deccan Odyssey works the same way. One booking covers your cabin, every meal, every guided off-train excursion, all monument entry fees, and private transfers at each stop. The only decisions you make each day are whether to join the day's excursion or take your coffee on the observation deck.

The alternative, doing this region by road, means coordinating hotel check-ins across Maharashtra and Goa, managing different drivers at each leg, and spending energy on logistics that most people at this stage of life would rather not spend. We've had clients do both. The ones who took the train tell us the same thing: they wish they hadn't waited.

Check in once. Then let the journey carry you from one experience to the next.

01 One cabin Settle into the same private space throughout the journey.
02 Everything arranged Meals, excursions, monument entry and private transfers are covered.
03 More time for India Spend more of your journey experiencing the places you came to see.
CO₂

One more point worth knowing: traveling by train between these same destinations emits roughly 50% less carbon than flying between them.

A note on cabin categories

Choose the space
that suits your journey.

The Deccan Odyssey offers two main cabin levels. The standard cabin is a well-appointed twin or double room with an ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, and panoramic windows — comfortable for most travelers.

The superior cabin offers more space, upgraded furnishings, and better views of the passing landscape. If you like room to move and you're spending seven nights on board, the superior cabin is worth the additional cost. We're happy to describe the difference in more detail if you contact us.

Before you board

The details make the difference.

The most memorable journeys feel effortless because the practical questions were answered early. Here is what we discuss with our travelers before departure.

Watch the official film
01

Staying connected

Wi-Fi is available on board, but reception can vary between cities and rural stretches. Plan for messages and email; do not depend on uninterrupted video calls. Cabins have charging points. We can advise you on a local SIM before boarding and help you confirm an emergency contact through the train team.

02

Walking at the caves

Ajanta has a hillside approach, while Ellora covers a wider area. Expect some uneven ground and steps. Tell us about any mobility concerns before booking so we can check the specific excursions with the operator. You can also choose to stay on board for a quieter day.

03

Dining your way

Vegetarian, mild, gluten-free and other dietary needs are best raised when you book. We will pass your requests to the culinary team in advance and confirm what can be arranged. Bottled water is provided on board.

04

The wider India journey

Many guests pair the train with Delhi and the Taj Mahal, then spend a night in Mumbai before boarding. That rest day makes the first evening feel far more relaxed. We can shape the days around your chosen train departure and add time in Mumbai or Goa afterward.

Delhi→Agra→Mumbai→The train→Goa

Our advice: share your needs early. We will check the details that matter to you before you commit.

Who travels on this train?

Some guests are returning to India. Others are celebrating a turning point, or setting out on their own. What they share is a curiosity for the country beyond its most familiar sights.

01 / The return journey

There is more of India to discover.

You have seen Rajasthan and the Taj Mahal. Now you want a different perspective: ancient cave temples, the western coastline and a wine region that rarely appears on a first visit.

02 / The milestone

Make the occasion part of the journey.

A retirement, a significant birthday, an anniversary. Seven nights on board offer time to celebrate without rushing from one place to the next.

03 / The independent spirit

Go solo. Enjoy the company.

Explore each stop at your own pace, then share stories over dinner or in the lounge. The train gives an independent traveler a natural social rhythm, without asking them to join a conventional group tour.

Whichever journey sounds like yours, we can help you find the right departure and cabin.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs for your Deccan Odyssey journey.

The questions travelers ask before booking often matter just as much as the itinerary itself. Here are the practical details to consider before your Deccan Odyssey journey.

Deccan Odyssey frequently asked questions

01 Will the train’s movement disturb my sleep?

The train travels overnight, so you may hear the rails and feel some movement. If you are a particularly light sleeper, tell us before choosing a cabin so we can talk through what a night on board is like.

02 Can we choose our own itinerary stops?

Each departure follows a set route; individual stops cannot be swapped. We will review the itinerary with you before booking, including the guided excursions and any optional activities on that journey.

03 Will American guests feel at home?

The train welcomes international travelers, and the scheduled guided excursions include English-speaking local guides. You can enjoy the company on board while exploring India beyond the usual first-time route.

04 Why arrange the journey through White Pigeon?

We help you choose the itinerary and cabin, prepare for each stop, and connect the rail journey with the rest of your India trip. You have one point of contact to discuss the details before departure.

05 Can the kitchen handle dietary needs?

Tell us about allergies, gluten-free needs or spice preferences at the time of booking. The train asks guests to inform the chef or Train Manager on board as well; its chef will endeavour to accommodate special requests where possible.

06 How reliable is the Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is listed among the train’s facilities, but connection quality can vary along the route. If family needs to reach you, plan a mobile roaming or local SIM option and share your travel details before departure. Do not rely on continuous video calling.

07 What if walking is difficult for one of us?

Heritage-site visits may involve steps and uneven ground. Tell us the specific mobility needs and the route you are considering; we can check each excursion and train facility with the operator before you book.

08 What if we need to cancel?

Cancellation charges rise as departure approaches. We will show you the operator’s current terms for your booking before you commit. Consider travel insurance that covers cancellation and interruption, subject to the policy’s own conditions.

Have a question about a particular departure? We can review the details together.
