Today is a true combination of exploration, culture, and iconic country landmarks. After an early breakfast we hit the road for the easy journey to Memphis. Thousands of years older than its Tennessee namesake, this is home to the second largest sphinx in Egypt and a plethora of towering statues, including that of Rameses II. This UNESCO site will captivate you like no other, not only because of its awe-inspiring history, but the way your guide brings the tales to life. Memphis dates back over 5,200 years, and is the oldest capital city in Egypt. Feast your eyes on amazing antiquities and prized possessions of many pharaohs and kings.
We have plenty of time to explore the Pyramids of Sakkara, an incredible necropolis that’s home to the oldest of all of the country’s tombs—the Step Pyramid. And at more than 7,000 years old this takes experiencing history to a whole new level! Prepare to gaze in wonder when you enter these sacred tombs, laying a privileged eye upon inscriptions chiseled out by craftsmen not simply of yesteryear, but of an age that we today can only dream of.
Returning to Cairo our journey into the peculiarities of ancient Egyptian history continues with a visit to the Great Pyramid ,Lunch is taken during the day at one of Cairo’s most iconic restaurants, El Felfalah, and dinner brings a unique experience aboard The Pharaohs Cruising Restaurant—a glorious boat inspired by the solar ship we’ve seen earlier, where we dine in style and are entertained by the colorful spectacle of a traditional Egyptian show.
DAY 3
In Cairo
We take breakfast early before heading to the UNESCO site of Dahshour. This royal necropolis is located on the west bank of The Nile approximately 25 miles from Cairo, and is the location of two of the oldest, largest, and best preserved pyramids in the country: the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. Built between 2613 and 2589 BC, your journey back through the millennia continues to play with your mind as we try to comprehend the skills of the ancient Egyptians to have constructed structures that are still standing proud today.
We lunch at the wonderful traditional restaurant of Abu Shakra where we feast on deliciously authentic fare in a setting loved by locals and visitors alike.
DAY 4
Fly Cairo / Luxor
Enjoy an early breakfast and then board our transport at 08:00 am to visit what is probably to most fascinating collection of ancient artifacts on the planet—The Egyptian Museum. After lunch at the authentic and welcoming Abou El Seid eatery we head to the airport for our flight to Luxor. On arrival we’re whisked to our hotel
DAY 5
In Luxor
We take an early breakfast as there’s much to explore today. We hit the West Bank, visiting the awe-inspiring Temple of Hatshepsut, stopping at the Colossi of Memnon along the way. These two enormous, 3,400-year-old statues will prime you for the truly outstanding sights that lie ahead, the first of which is the temple of one of the first female Pharaohs—Hatshepsut. This striking architectural masterpiece with its dramatic sheer cliff backdrop is a fitting tribute for the ‘queen who ruled as a king’.
Then we head for what is perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in all of Egypt, the Valley of the Kings. Many superlatives have been used to describe these archaic tombs, but nothing can prepare you for experiencing it for yourself. Discover more about the journey of the rich and powerful as they passed from this life to the next, and, of course, you get the chance to visit the tomb of perhaps the most famous king of all, Tutankhamun. We also get to marvel at the magnificent memorial built by Rameses III—The Temple of Habu.
We take a late, leisurely lunch at the consistently highly-rated Sunflower Restaurant where we enjoy typical Egyptian dishes and being to get excited for this evening’s main event. For as the sun gently sinks towards the horizon we head to the majestic Karnak Temple for the spectacular that is the Sound and Light Show. Ancient Thebes will once again come to life as Pharaohs rise to narrate the dramatic history that occurred thousands of years in the past.
DAY 6
In Luxor
After breakfast we head back to the glory of Karnak Temple to explore further, and we also have plenty of time to discover Luxor Temple as well. These awe-inspiring constructions are linked by the famous Avenue of Sphinxes. At 3km long you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for the cartouche of Cleopatra, bestowed when she visited the temples with Marc Antony—
We take lunch at the comfortable El Sofra Restaurant, where you can choose from the cool interior or soak up the ambiance on the terrace. The afternoon is free for self-exploration, or to simply enjoy some well-deserved R&R making the most of the hotel’s sumptuous facilities.
DAY 7
Luxor / Aswan
After Breakfast transfer to wheeled locomotion once again for the journey to Aswan. Time to rest your weary head, awaking perhaps for a surprisingly satisfying dinner as we go (the nomadic Egyptians certainly know a thing or two about food on the move), before arriving at our hotel
DAY 8
In Aswan
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before taking a motorboat ride to the Temple of Philae. This impressive structure, constructed to honor the goddess of Isis, stands on an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam. We then head to the enormity that is the Unfinished Obelisk. This fascinating monolithic monument lies in a bed of granite and was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut over 3,500 years ago. Had it been finished it would’ve been around a third larger than any other previously erected obelisk.
We take a classical Nubian lunch at the island restaurant of El Dokka during our exploration before an afternoon spent discovering more about the Nubian culture at a traditional village and dining on authentic Nubian fare.
DAY 9
Fly Aswan / Cairo
After breakfast we take our air conditioned transport to discovers the wonder that is Abu Simbel. This incredible complex of enormous temples dedicated to Rameses II was rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s, thanks to a herculean effort sponsored by UNESCO. The gargantuan statues of Rameses at each of the entrances to the temples are gloriously imposing, and wonderful examples of the splendor of ancient Egyptian architecture. We tour the temple before a welcome lunch at the popular restaurant of El Masry before heading to the airport for our short flight to Cairo.
Of course, we couldn’t leave the buzzing capital without experiencing that most traditional of Egyptian experiences—the souk. And the best of these is certainly the Kahn el Khalili Bazaar, and we have time to perfect our bartering within the every-changing alleyways. After shopping till we drop, we shrug off the chaos of outside for the air conditioned nirvana that is the Fattatri El Hussein Restaurant.
