Do UK Citizens Need a Visa to Enter India?

Yes — UK citizens cannot enter India without a visa.

There is no visa on arrival for UK passport holders.

What India does offer is an eVisa, which you apply for online before you travel.

You get approval by email, print it, and present it at the airport.

No embassy visits, no paper forms, no long waiting times.

Types of India Visa Available for UK Citizens

The visa you need depends on why you’re going.

Most UK tourists apply for the e-Tourist 30-day or e-Tourist 1-year visa.

If your India trip includes a side trip to Nepal or Sri Lanka, the 1-year multiple entry gives you the flexibility to leave and re-enter without applying again.

One rule you should know:

The e-Tourist visa cannot be extended inside India.

If you want to stay longer than 90 days, you’d need to exit and re-enter, or get a long-stay regular visa from the Indian High Commission in London before you travel.

How to Apply for India eVisa from the UK

The official application portal is the Government of India’s eVisa website.

What you need to apply:

  • Valid UK passport (at least 6 months validity from your India arrival date)
  • Passport-sized photograph on a white background (specific dimensions required)
  • Scanned copy of your passport bio-data page
  • Credit or debit card for payment
  • Your intended travel dates and first accommodation address

Processing time:

Most eVisas are approved within 72 hours.

Apply at least 4–7 days before departure — not because it takes that long, but to have time to fix any errors if your application is flagged.

You can apply up to 120 days before your arrival date.

What you receive:

An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) confirmation sent to your email as a PDF.

Print it and keep it with your passport.

Immigration officers at many airports still prefer to see a physical copy, even though the ETA is linked digitally to your passport number.

Which Indian Airports Accept eVisa?

This is important — not every airport in India processes eVisa arrivals.

Major airports that accept eVisa for UK citizens:

  • Delhi — Indira Gandhi International
  • Mumbai — Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International
  • Bangalore — Kempegowda International
  • Chennai International
  • Hyderabad — Rajiv Gandhi International
  • Kolkata — Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International
  • Cochin International
  • Goa — Manohar International Airport
  • Jaipur International
  • Ahmedabad — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International

There are 28 designated airports in total. The full list is on the official eVisa portal.

Critical note:

The eVisa is not valid at land border crossings.

If you’re entering India from Nepal or Sri Lanka by road or ferry, you need a regular visa from the Indian High Commission — not an eVisa.

Entry Requirements for UK Travelers to India (2026 Guide)

Passport Requirements UK Travelers Often Miss

This is the single most common reason travelers face problems — either at check-in or at immigration.

Your UK passport must:

  • Be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in India
  • Have at least 2 blank pages for immigration stamps
  • Be in good physical condition — torn pages, water damage, or missing covers can cause issues

Why this matters:

Airlines check passport validity before you board in the UK.

If your passport doesn’t meet the 6-month rule, you may be denied boarding — before India immigration even sees you.

Check your expiry date now, before you apply for your eVisa.

If it’s cutting close, renew your passport first.

Documents to Carry at Indian Immigration

When you land, have these ready in hand — not buried in your bag.

You must have:

  • Original UK passport (the same one used for eVisa application)
  • Printed eVisa / ETA confirmation
  • Return or onward ticket

Carry these too — they may be asked for:

  • Hotel booking confirmation or address of your first stay
  • Travel itinerary
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Proof of sufficient funds (credit card or bank statement)

Keep everything in a single folder or travel wallet.

Immigration queues move fast, and searching through your luggage when an officer is watching adds unnecessary stress.

What Actually Happens at Indian Airport Immigration?

Let’s walk through the real experience so nothing feels unfamiliar when you arrive.

Step 1 — Follow signs after landing

Signs will direct you to Passport Control or Immigration.

Join the queue marked “Foreign Nationals” — not the Indian passport queue.

Step 2 — Document check

Hand over your passport and printed eVisa.

The officer scans both and verifies the details.

Step 3 — Biometrics

At most major airports, your fingerprints and photo are taken.

This is routine and takes under a minute.

Step 4 — Questions (if asked)

You may be asked:

  • “What is the purpose of your visit?”
  • “How long are you staying?”
  • “Where are you staying?”

Answer simply.

“Tourism” or “sightseeing” is a completely normal answer.

You don’t need to explain your full itinerary.

Step 5 — Entry stamp

Your passport gets stamped and you’re officially in India.

From landing to clearing immigration at Delhi or Mumbai typically takes 30–60 minutes, depending on flight timing and how busy the terminal is.

Are There Restricted Areas in India UK Travelers Should Know About?

Yes — and most travelers only discover this when they’re already deep into planning a specific region.

Certain states and areas require special permits on top of your tourist visa.

Protected Area Permit (PAP) required for parts of:

  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Nagaland (some areas)
  • Manipur (inner regions)
  • Mizoram

Other permit requirements:

  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands — popular tourist islands are open; tribal reserve areas are off-limits
  • Lakshadweep — an entry permit is needed, usually arranged through a registered tour operator
  • Sikkim — some border zones near China require a Protected Area Permit

If any of these are on your itinerary, check with the relevant state authority or a travel consultant well before departure.

Permits sometimes require a tour operator to sponsor the application and can take time to process.

Passport Rules for India (UK Citizens Must Know)

Common Entry Mistakes UK Travelers Make

These are the things that actually cause stress at the airport — and they’re all avoidable.

  1. Passport validity under 6 months

The most common reason for boarding denial.

Check your expiry date before you even start the visa application.

  1. Applying for the wrong visa type

An e-Tourist visa cannot be used for business activities.

If you’re attending a trade show, meetings, or a conference, apply for the appropriate visa category.

  1. Not printing the eVisa

Your ETA is linked digitally to your passport — but print it anyway.

Many immigration officers ask to see the physical copy, and it avoids any confusion if there’s a tech issue.

  1. Renewing your passport after applying for the visa

Your eVisa is tied to the passport number you used during application.

If you renewed your passport after applying, the eVisa is now linked to your old passport number.

In that case, bring both passports to the airport, or cancel the old eVisa and reapply using your new passport.

  1. Not knowing your hotel details

Immigration sometimes asks where you’re staying on arrival.

Know the name and address of your first night’s accommodation — or at minimum, have it pulled up on your phone.

  1. Overstaying the eVisa

The stay limits are fixed and strictly enforced.

Overstaying can result in fines at the airport and complications with future India visa applications.

Can UK Citizens Be Denied Entry to India?

Yes — but it’s genuinely rare when your documents are in order.

The most common reasons for denial:

  • Passport validity under 6 months
  • eVisa expired, incorrect, or linked to a different passport
  • Damaged or physically compromised passport
  • Suspicious or inconsistent travel documents
  • Previous visa overstays on record

If you’re stopped or questioned:

Stay calm and don’t panic.

Ask to speak to a senior immigration officer and present all your supporting documents — return ticket, hotel booking, travel insurance.

Most situations like this get resolved when the traveler is prepared and composed.

How long before my trip should I apply for an India eVisa?

Tourist eVisas cannot normally be extended from within India.

If you need a longer stay, arrange the appropriate visa before traveling or leave India before your authorized stay expires.
